The Greek mythology Essay Example for Free

The Greek folklore Essay The Greek folklore is one of the most energizing yet confused subjects when contemplating writing. Because it’s a remote subject as well as in light of the fact that the folklore itself, the anecdotes about the Greek divine beings and the experiences of the humans with superhuman quality, removes us out far and wide from the four corners of the study hall. In Greek Mythology, there are two characters that would be the focal point of this paper. This are Jason of Iolcus, of the Argonauts and Golden Fleece acclaim; and Paris of Troy, of the Trojan War and Helen of Troy distinction. These two characters will be presented consistently and their separate experiences will be described. Jason and Paris are one among numerous who were questionable in view of their choices throughout everyday life and their relationship with ladies. From now on, the subject of this paper is to call attention to the examination among Paris and Jason, just as their disparities. In deciding these things, we showed up with an inquiry that over the span of this paper, we endeavored to reply. [Given the conditions of their reality, who was the better man?] The term better is abstract and would be matter of contention, however we have concocted a couple of rules in order to have a reason for the last answer that would be summed up in the end. The announcement better man would be established on this grounds: Valor, poise, dauntlessness, battling aptitudes, errands performed (pace of accomplishment), relations with the divine beings, impact on history and folklore, relations with ladies (spouse like characteristics), relations with posterity (Father-like demeanor), relations with relative, relations with devotees (authority characteristics), and the capacity to endure. This paper will begin with the presentation of Greek folklore. Who are the divine beings and what their business are and what their forces are. Particularly the divine force of divine beings Zeus, his siblings Poseidon and Hades, his significant other Hera, his little girls Athena and Aphrodite and his child Apollo. Other minor divine beings who had an influence on Jason and Paris’ lives, for example, Eris, Eros and Hermes would likewise be connected. After which, Paris and Jason’s lives would be unwound, for example, their introduction to the world and the prophet; their lives from their expected to be genuine lives; their undertakings and their demises. All through this, an examination of their judgment, character and dynamic dependent on the referenced rules would be applied. The Greek Mythology: Who are the divine beings? Greek folklore is one of the most generally read and most fascinating subject with regards to English writing. Its where most interesting stories originate from, from similarly fascinating characters, much the same as having an imaginary world where the divine beings were the celebrities and Olympus was Hollywood. The Olympian time begins with Zeus ousting his dad Cronus, who was the leader of the senior divine beings known as the Titans. The vast majority of the Titans battled with Cronus against Zeus and when Zeus won the fight, he banished these Titans in a land called Tartarus in the black market. Zeus at that point separated the Universe among himself and his siblings Poseidon and Hades. Zeus took the sky on Mount Olympus where he lived with his better half and his sisters and kids. Mount Olympus is the most elevated mountain run in Greece situated in the north of Greece. Zeus is the most remarkable of the entirety of the old divine beings; individuals adored and dreaded him simultaneously. He typifies equity, ethics and law. His weapon is a jolt, and is likewise well known for his various acts of unfaithfulness to his significant other Hera. Hera is additionally a sister of Zeus, and is revered as the goddess of marriage and birth. Hera is depicted as an envious spouse consistently keeping watch for the different exercises of Zeus and his various relationships and his ill-conceived youngsters. Hera was constantly delineated as somebody who might pulverize with most extreme and preposterous rage the lives of Zeus’ darlings and their kids. Zeus and Hera had three kids, Hephaestus, the lord of fire and fountain of liquid magma; Hebe, goddess of youth, and Ares, divine force of war. Hephaestus is supposed to be the ugliest of the divine beings and due to his physical appearance, it was said that Hera flung him from Mount Olympus to the sea and in doing so broke his legs, that’s why Hephaestus is weak. He is the innovative falsifier who made all the weapons of the divine beings, he is otherwise called the supporter of all skilled workers. Hephaestus wedded Aphrodite, who is additionally reputed as Zeus little girl with another minor goddess Dione. Aphrodite is the goddess of affection, want, sex and magnificence. Like Zeus, Aphrodite’s relationships are likewise very much pitched. Beside her significant other Hephaestus, she had an unsanctioned romance with the most attractive human named Adonis, the Trojan Anchises, the half-god half-mortal Dionysus, the winged god Hermes and Ares the lord of war and sibling of Hephaestus. The goddess of shrewdness, Athena, is additionally one of Zeus kids from his numerous acts of unfaithfulness. In any case, Athena was conceived in a one of a kind way, of springing forward from Zeus brow altogether grown up and completely protected, that’s why Zeus supported Athena a great deal, in any event, having the benefit of utilizing Zeus’ jolt weapon now and again. Apollo and Artemis are the twin offspring of Zeus from a Titan goddess named Leto. Apollo is the divine force of music, recuperating, truth and prescience. The prophet of Delphi is devoted to him. He is otherwise called the Archer and the benefactor divine force of the Trojans. Artemis, Apollo’s twin sister is the goddess of celibacy, virginity and chasing. She was the person who quieted the oceans when the Greek King Agamemnon executed one of her consecrated deer with the goal that they couldn't dispatch their boats in the beginning of the Trojan War. So as to pacify her, Agamemnon relinquished his girl Iphigenia to be one of the goddess’s priestess. Another god is Hermes, another of Zeus’ ill-conceived youngsters, who is otherwise called the flag-bearer of the divine beings. He is constantly delineated having winged shoes, winged head protector and an enchantment wand. Specialists and criminals love him as their god. Second in capacity to Zeus is his sibling Poseidon, divine force of the ocean. He holds a weapon called trident, which he utilizes in to strike the ground, causing seismic tremors when he is furious. He is known for his rough conduct, inconsistent attitude and like Zeus, likewise fathered a great deal of youngsters. Presently, Eris, the goddess of dissension and difficulty is additionally supposed to be one of Zeus’ kids and is the steady friend of Ares, the killing yet weakling lord of war. It is Eris who tossed the apple of conflict with the engraving â€Å"To the Fairest† in the wedding of the human Peleus and the ocean fairy Thetis (guardians of Achilles), wherein three of the goddesses, specifically Aphrodite, Athena and Hera made a case for it. They approached to Zeus to grant the apple to the most attractive of them however since Hera is his significant other and Athena and Aphrodite are his little girls, he approached to the human Paris to do the judging. Paris granted the apple to Aphrodite in view of her pay off of giving him Helen, the most wonderful lady on earth. This occasion is known as the Judgment of Paris, and the initiation of the ever well known Trojan War. Who is Paris? His Birth and the Oracle When Hecuba, Queen of Troy was pregnant with Paris, she imagined that she had delivered a torch that would be the wellspring of demolition of Troy. Diviners or prophets deciphered her fantasy that the youngster she is conveying, which was Paris, would pulverize the city of Troy, in this manner the kid ought to be slaughtered. Priam, the King of Troy and Hecabe couldn't kill infant Paris when he was conceived, so all things considered, Priam gave the child to a worker named Agelaus with the guidance to uncover him on Mount Ida, a bumpy region close to Troy. Notwithstanding, following nine days when the worker returned to cover the as far as anyone knows dead youngster, he was amazed to discover infant Paris still alive, in light of the fact that clearly, a bear had breast fed him. Bewildered with the baby’s destiny, Agelaus took child Paris to his home and raised him up as his own child; he gave him the name Paris. Paris grew up to be a solid and attractive youngster. Alexander was reasonable, tall, and bold. His eyes were excellent, his hair delicate and fair, his mouth beguiling, and his voice lovely. He was quick, and anxious to take order. (qtd. We say goodbye to SIPA alumna Anita Datar COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY - SIPA Admissions Blog It is with unbelievable sadness to share with all of you that SIPA lost a wonderful family member this week. Anita Datar, MPA-MPH  2003, died during the terrorist attack in Bamako, Mali on Friday. There has been an outpouring of support for Anita across social media. I received the following message from her friend and current SIPA student Tushar Malik, MIA 2017: She was a brilliant public health specialist, and her unwavering spirit still lives on in her work. Thats what she was doing in Mali trying to make the world a better place. She was a passionate advocate for women and LGBTQ rights, and cared a lot about public health and HIV. Ive rarely met anyone so driven and committed; she was doing this work in countries where such conversations are taboo and difficult, but she unflinchingly kept working with communities on the ground in these places. Anita  is the only known American killed in the siege on the hotel, reports  The Washington Post. We have just learned of the news, and SIPA Dean Merit E. Janow sent the following message to the entire SIPA community: Dear Members of the SIPA Community, We mourn the passing of Anita Ashok Datar, a 2003 dual-degree graduate of Columbia’s Mailman School and SIPA, who was killed in a terrorist attack  on a hotel in Bamako, Mali, on November 20, 2015. Anita was an extraordinary individual who dedicated her life to the service of others and she will be remembered as a committed humanitarian and tireless advocate for global public health and women’s health and social justice.  She came to Columbia after serving as a Peace Corps volunteer in Senegal. She was in Mali as a representative of Palladium, and according to them she was serving as the Senior Director for Field Programs for HP+, a USAID-funded health policy project focused on improving reproductive health in developing countries.  She was also the co-founder and board member of Tulalens, a not-for-profit organization connecting underserved communities with quality health services. Many of our students and graduates devote their lives to improving the world and working on economic development. Some are in very difficult environments with much personal sacrifice. Utilitarian And Virtue Ethics Of Physician Assisted Suicide

Physician Assisted Suicide Physician assisted suicide or PAS is a controversial topic in the world today. But the important question is, should physician assisted suicides be allowed in cases such as: the patient’s suffering is far too great and there is no chance of them getting better? This is a highly debated issue, that has activist groups on both sides fighting for what they think is the right thing to do. Physician assisted suicides can stop the excruciating pain a patient is in, especially if there is nothing that can be done to stop the pain. Or it can be done for a patient that fully understands that there is nothing that can be done to save their life, so as not to put their loved ones into financial hardship. In this†¦show more content†¦6.1). Since this ethical theory deals with virtuous character, that would be a good trait when you are trusting a doctor with your medical needs. In a moral dilemma, using a process that considers making the most people happy may be the best outcome. Radbruch, Leget, Bahr, Mà ¼ller-Busch, Ellershaw, de Conno, Vanden Berghe (2016) defines assisted suicide as â€Å"a person intentionally helping another person to terminate his or her life, at that person’s voluntary and competent request† (pg. 5). With this definition, the patient is in complete understanding of outcome of their decision. So applying the utilitarian theory, it would be to allow patients that fit all the criteria the choice of physician assisted suicide as it would provide them the happiness of having that as a choice. This is an important choice to have because as it states in the same article, â€Å"patients must be suffering unbearably, with no prospect of improvement, but the illness does not have to be terminal† (Radbruch et al, 2016, pg. 4). Why should someone wanting to go through with a physician assisted suicide be forced to l ive a life they do not want? Also, having this choice would make the greatest amount of happiness for most number of patients because the patient would feel like a burden emotionally and financially to their families. A Brief Look at William Byrd - 761 Words

While researching the style period the Renaissance, I came about the composer William Byrd. He played a large role in the paper I instructed and thus caught my attention. I chose William Bryd as the subject for this paper merely because according to â€Å"The Top 8 Renaissance Composer† Article by Aaron Green, he was considered by many to be a â€Å"genius† on the keyboard and perhaps the greatest English composer of all time. Other aspect about William Bryd I found interesting was his interact with Queen Elizabeth I and Thomas Tallis, and this major works like â€Å"Latin motets or Cantiones Sacrae† along with many more. William Byrd’s early life is unknown; He is believed to have been born in London sometime between 1539 and 1545. The exact date is unclear. He was one of seven children. He had four sisters, Alice, Barbara, Mary, and Martha and two brothers, Simon and John. His parents were Thomas and Margery Byrd. There is no written record of William Byrd’s education, however he was a well-educated man, able to read and write very well in this time. William married in 1568 to a Juliana. They then had seven children and a lifelong happy marriage. He eventually after a strong career as a composer or chorister died on July 4th 1623 in a small village of Essex and was buried in an unmarked grave. Why did pollock’s art work no.5 (1948) sell for $140million in 2006 Free Essays

Introduction I chose to write about this topic mainly because I have always been interested in why some art works can be so expensive. I have decided to break my essay down into four sections: how does any artist get a price for their art work – in other words how did Pollock’s work get on the art market, how Pollock got such a high price for his work, why a 1948 painting and why the painting got sold for an extraordinary amount in 2006. After Reading the text from M. We will write a custom essay sample on Why did pollock’s art work no.5 (1948) sell for $140million in 2006? or any similar topic only for you Order Now Carter â€Å"Framing Art† I got a better understanding of why M. Carter stated â€Å"Clearly has nothing to do with the value of the materials that it is made of, or the value of the labor†¦Ã¢â‚¬ I could see exactly where he was coming from and I agree with his text. By the time I had read the whole text by M. Carter, he had fully justified himself as to why there are differences in the art market prices, reasons due to the key periods of an artist’s work, the issues of the artist’s involvement in the making, their physical status and as well as the situation of the art market. Even just taking the word â€Å"Commodity† from the title of â€Å"Framing Art† to me is art that is not purely an expression of the artist’s ideas but instead is tailored in its own subject matter and style to appeal and attract to a specific commercial art. I think for artists get a price for their artwork they must first of all be in the art market. The art market will first of all determine the value as well as the reputation of the artist. I believe the pricing is mostly determined by the law of supply and the demand and I think most artists usually have a big supply and little or no demand. I myself as a Fine Art artist think about pricing my own art work most of the time it involves me visiting art galleries on a regular basis to find out where my art work fits in to the current art work. I believe that the art world has its trends in the same way fashion does and also that it is not so much about the rarity of the artists work but much more of popularity. An artists work whose is warm will be likely to get much higher prices at an auction. Also an auction track record is another important reason why artists obtain high prices. This gives an indication of what the market is willing to pay. Paul Jackson Pollock was born on January the 28th in 1912 and since then his painting work was controversial over his short lifetime. Jackson Pollock was an American painter well known for his role in the abstract expressionist movement. Pollock painted all through his lifetime and was well known for it. He literally invented the drip painting technique, which changed the course of modern art history. â€Å"The painting was done on an 8’x4’ sheet of fibreboard with thick amounts of brown and yellow paint drizzled on top of it, forming a nest like appearance†. The person who sold his no.5 painting was David Geffen and the person who bought the painting was David Martinez in 2006. This painting was the highest price paid for a piece of art work for a contemporary painting. Taken from archives of AskART it was stated that Jackson Pollock was dubbed â€Å"Jack the Dripper† (Time magazine 1956) for his revolutionary technique of gestural painting that freed generations of American artists from academic strictures. He used dissonant, garish colours, and applied paint with energetic circular motions to large canvases so that his work exuded physical energy.† When I was doing some research about Jackson Pollock and his curators I watched an interesting short video from the Museum Of Modern Art October 3 – April 11, 2011 taken from Abstract Expressionist New York. The video explained the work of Pollock, described when looking at his work- the way his paintings make you feel as if you are in the painting i.e. the movement, Pollock’s energy in his artwork, objects embedded in his paintings, what he did that was extreme in terms of the painting tradition. The short video then described the story of Pollock and his wife Lee. He asked h er â€Å"is this a painting?† and by this Pollock himself was not sure what he himself had made. He departed himself from using a brush and making brush stokes instead would use wooden tips of brushes to fling or drip his paintings across the canvas with other objects and materials. There are no ends of adjectives you could use. I have been to galleries and museums before to look at the artwork of Pollock and when I look at his work I feel a lot of movement like people are dancing in a crowd and with all the drips and splatters in many contrasting colours. M. Carter talks and explains a lot of important things in his text. He gives an explanation and says â€Å"Artists in contemporary society rarely avail themselves of naturally occurring materials but are dependant upon intermediate technologies to provide the materials which are subsequently utilised to construct the Art object†. Further on in his text he defines the meaning of work and labour. After making a distinction between the two he explains that â€Å"So even before artistic production commences the artist- producer is confronted by the necessity of having type of financial resource in order to begin†Ã¢â‚¬ ¦still on the same topic he concludes with â€Å"We can summarise these basic conditions of artistic production in the following way: Any consideration of Art production must always bear these elementary conditions in mind because they clearly demonstrate that right from the moment of inception (and despite the myths and ideologies that surround notions of artistic creation), Art is embedded in intricate and collective networks of differential types of work, all of which are forms of labour and all of which therefore require considerable sums of money being expanded in order to maintain the conditions of artistic production.† In the next topic M. Carter went into detail on the topic of use value and exchange value. He first of all makes a distinction between the use value of an object and its exchange value, this generally explains how it takes place. By doing this he uses an example of a tin soup in terms of an Art object. â€Å"The exchange value of an object refers to a different dimension and may be initially grasped by the term price, or how much money will be required in order to buy the can of soup†Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ The result of this â€Å"putting a price on its head† is that the economic value of an object can now be expressed in the form of a monetary value. Pollock got such a high price for his No.5 painting because it was a masterpiece of Abstract Expressionism which combined a balanced composition of paint in several splatters, lines, shapes, a combination of colours and abstract forms. This masterpiece painting was the most expensive and important piece of art when it was sold for $140 million in 2006. Up until today Pollock is still known and remembered as a â€Å"pioneer of Abstract Expressionism†. Even Clement Greenberg once described Pollock as the â€Å"most original contemporary easel painter under forty†. I think that because of Pollock’s status in the Art market and contributions in the abstract movement his few paintings that are left could probably rise in value and maybe even more than his No.5, 1948 painting. I watched another video on the MoMA Multimedia website and this one was called â€Å"Contemporary Artists onAbstract Impressionists†. The short video explained how Pollock wanted to change the dimension of what art was all about. His paintings weren’t representations of physical landscapes but more of the dimension of the mind and material as to what it can do. There are no people or faces in the paintings, they are totally non objective abstract paintings. I think they are all somehow encompassing. Anything you see is in the painting, there is no definitive thing in his artwork that anybody can see better or worse than another person looking at the piece, so in other words it is an experience looking at the painting. Pollock and his wife Lee Krasner both made an attempt in the mid 20th century to help artists break free from the traditional art approach and art customs. Around that time and up till today there is still an appreciation for art and I believe the value for art would have continued to rise and rise. I also believe that for Pollock’s painting to have sold for the amount of $140 million just shows that the status of people compared to back then have changed. Sun Also Rises Appreciation Essays - The Sun Also Rises

Sun Also Rises Appreciation I cannot express to you how glad I am that I am taking this class. I am thoroughly enjoying Hemingway. The Sun Also Rises is one of the best books I've read in quite a long time. For a while there, I was, for God knows what reason, taking Physics and Chemistry and Biology. It is really an adventure to be back with books and words and reading. I am also amazed that I never could read more of Him when it wasn't an assignment. And how is it that when I am told to write "a 3-5 page essay" I can only come through with two-and-a-half, but a "one-page response" always wants to be twenty pages long?] I finished reading SAR around ten o'clock tonight. I could have taken it all in one big gulp when I began a week ago, but I couldn't do that. It wanted me to bring it out slowly, so I often found myself reading five or ten pages and laying it aside to absorb without engulfing. A man gets used to reading Star Wars and pulp fiction and New York Times Bestsellers and forgets what literature is until it slaps him in the face. This book was written, not churned out or word-processed. Again, I thoroughly enjoyed reading. I never noticed it until it was brought up in class, maybe because it wasn't a point for me in In Our Time, but He doesn't often enough credit quotations with, ",he said," or, ",said Brett," or, ",Bill replied." In SAR it stood and called attention to itself. I wasn't particularly bothered by His not telling me who said what, but it was very...pointed. I first noticed around the hundredth page or so. Then I realized I couldn't keep track of who was speaking. By not dwelling on it, though, sort of (hate to say this) accepting it, I managed to assign speech to whomever I felt was speaking. Gradually I came to enjoy it, in another plane of reading, figuring out from whom words were originating. To not notice it, as if it were one of those annoying 3-D posters that you can't see until you make a concerted effort not to try and see, became simple - much like those 3-D pictures are once you know what not to look for. (I abhor ending sentences with prepositions...) His not telling was heightening to the story. It made things come even more alive. As a conversation that you're hearing at a nearby table in a restaurant, the exchanges flowed, with me as a more passive reader than in a story written to be read instead of lived. It has always been troubling for me to read a book with the knowledge that there are things I am supposed to be catching, but not quite. The fish in the pools and the allegory and analogy and symbolism aren't fond of me. Trying to see that the bull-fighters and their purity or lack and how it relates to Him as a writer surrounded by a universe of new fiction printed for the masses, that is all fine and well. The short sentences, the lack of qualifying, "he said"s and "she saids" and such, the tragedy of his love for Brett, those are the things I enjoy reading. Those are the reasons I read and the reasons a man like Him writes. There are stranger things, Horatio...or something like that. I believe Paul Simon read Hemingway at some point in his life. It is a good book. I was surprised that more was not given to the bulls. The entire story was leading to it, and then it was done and they were gone. Very powerful they were but fleeting. I want to go now, of course, to Pamplona, as I'm sure everyone who reads does after finishing. It is probably terible now with touristas and Coke and Nike all around, but I bet still beautiful. A man was killed this year, did you know?

The eNotes Blog Macbeth Unlocked

Macbeth Unlocked William Shakespeare remains, hands down, one of the most well-known and influential writers  in recent history. Throughout his career, he published a truly impressive library of sonnets, poems, verses, plays, and tales. Among  these works, Shakespeare is credited with the writing of four major tragedies:  Hamlet, King Lear, Othello, and, of course,  Macbeth.   Macbeth is, in addition to being a fabulous drama, an incredibly dark, dramatic story.  To very briefly summarize, the story goes  (spoilers!):  one day a man gets very cocky. A magic lady tells this cocky man that  hell be king. He gets cockier still and commits some murders. People get very angry, and this leads these angry people to kill the cocky man. Now, tell me that isnt a heavy storyline. (Heres a full summary of the play  and,  if you havent read the story, heres a free digital etext- because you really should read this story in full). No  matter how wonderful the story may be, we understand it can sometimes be difficult to get through Shakespearian literature. Slogging through the storm of verily and doth often gets confusing, and it can be invaluable to have someone explain the story in plain English and, better yet, tell you what the most important take-aways are. Well, youve come to the right place! Weve gathered together some of the most important bits and pieces of Macbeth and put them together right here in this post. Read on and follow links to anything that interests and/or confuses you! Macbeth As a character, this guy is actually pretty difficult to get a read on. At the beginning of the story, he seems like a decent guy, fighting for his country and whatnot,  but before you know it hes turned around and killed half of Scotland* (and that is what we call a hyperbole). So what happened? How many people does Macbeth kill in his play? Answers  Ã¢â€ â€™ Macbeths downward spiral as a character isnt as fast of a decline as I may have said before, but the man  certainly undergoes a  devolution as a moral being. Clearly spurred by his own ambition and the urging of his wife, Macbeth steps into the shoes of a murderous tyrant-to-be and descends into psychopathy. With  the modifications to Macbeths  personality, we see corresponding changes in the role and personality of Lady Macbeth. At the plays outset, Lady Macbeth is the aggressor, encouraging her unwilling husband to follow his ambitious inclinations and kill the king for the advancement of their status. As the story continues, however, we see Lady Macbeth beginning to take more of a backseat role, watching her husband commit these horrible murders and taking no part in them herself. Instead, Lady Macbeth appears to go mad with guilt- constantly washing her hands to wash away blood that isnt there. So what happened between Macbeth and his wife?  Heres a comprehensive look at their intertwined character development. Lady Macbeth Weve already talked a little bit about how Lady Macbeth evolves as a character, but it remains valuable to look at  her character in isolation from Macbeth as much as it is important to look at the two together. First, from a historical perspective, we have to acknowledge the fact that Lady Macbeth is a woman- and women in this time period really had nothing going for them but what their husbands were able to boast.  Lady Macbeths station in life is  entirely dependent on that of her husband. That isnt to say she isnt a terrible person- murder is murder, but she only encourages him so that she can move up in the world. Okay, that sounds even worse. Regardless, Macbeths willingness to listen to his wifes advice says something about the relationship between the two. As the story  progresses, we begin to see more guilt wracking the Ladys conscience. It seems she reaches a moral breakthrough so powerful that it leads to her suicide. How does Lady Macbeth change  throughout  the play? Answers  Ã¢â€ â€™ Quotes Lets face it: Shakespeare is a quotable guy. So many little idioms that we have floating around, even today, have origins in Shakespeares work (thats one reason its worth it to get  through his writing- its likely youll find a little hidden gem, which  is  quite exciting!). Macbeth undoubtedly includes  some of those sayings we use in everyday conversation, but there are also a whole bunch of deeper, beautiful, and somewhat mystifying quotes in the play that are actually pretty important to the overall story. Here are some quotes and links to thorough explanations: Fair is foul and foul is fair. Act 1, Scene 1 Lifes but a walking shadow. Act 5, Scene 5 Out, brief candle Act 5, Scene 5 False face must hide what the false heart doth know. Act 1, Scene 7 Theres daggers in mens smiles.  Act 2, Scene 2 Tragedy First, we should discuss what makes a play a tragedy, because its too easy to say that a tragic play is a play in which something sad happens. Sad things do happen in tragedies, but theres more to the definition than that. Tragedy  is defined as a branch of drama that treats sorrowful or terrible events in a serious and dignified manner. Further, these unfortunate events are encountered or caused by  the tragic hero. Now, the tragic hero is another figure that seems fairly self-explanatory, but well highlight it anyway: a tragic hero is a character who makes an error in judgment which ultimately leads to his or her destruction. (*link to HH question about what is a tragic hero). We can easily surmise that Macbeth is a tragedy due to its dramatic depictions  of murder and an eventual suicide. Again, that is a greatly summarized and simplified explanation of a complicated description, so  heres  further reading about what makes  Macbeth a tragic play. Now that we have come to the conclusion that  Macbeth  is a tragedy, it follows that the main character, Macbeth, is a tragic hero. It is true that Macbeth really does cause his own problems from the get-go. If he hadnt been inspired to murder his kindly King, he wouldnt have ended up dead by the hand of a former ally. I hope that doesnt give away the whole play, but just in case, I will leave the rest of the analysis of Macbeth as a tragic hero to . Summation Identifying a concrete theme of  any work is a difficult task;  identifying the theme of a work more than four hundred years old is even more difficult. That being said, there are many assertions to be made as to the overarching theme of Macbeth. In determining a theme, you have to look for recurring aspects with analyzable elements. When talking about Macbeth, a few  words may jump out at you, such as  greed or  ambition or, I dont know,  murder. All of these concepts work together to form  a cohesive and grizzly theme in the play, along with smaller pieces of the puzzle like insanity, fear, and matters of the supernatural. What are the specific names of the 3 witches? Answers  Ã¢â€ â€™ *Bonus Fun Fact:  Macbeth  was written in an attempt to please the new King of England, King James I. This new king originally hailed from Scotland before ascending the English throne and had a distinct interest in supernatural happenings- thus the plays setting and inclusion of witches. Further, it is a  fact that the throne of England was one that saw a lot of bloody turnover, so it was likely an interest of both James and Shakespeare to comment on Jamess rise to power, like Malcolm in  Macbeth, as a wise and just monarch. Why did Shakespeare write Macbeth? Answers  Ã¢â€ â€™

Hack, Hacker and Hacking

Hack, Hacker and Hacking Hack, Hacker and Hacking Hack, Hacker and Hacking By Maeve Maddox A reader is puzzled by a new permutation of the word hack: The word hack, until recently, meant to break into someones Internet account or system. Now I see it meaning tips or suggestions.   Am I correct? Like this reader, the only meaning that hack held for me in regard to computers was as a verb meaning â€Å"to illegally enter a computer system.† I too was surprised to come across headlines like the following: 100 Life Hacks That Make Life Easier 23 Inventive Hacks That Every Parent Should Know Millennials Are Ditching Delivery for This Dinner Hack Best Travel Hacks 17 Thanksgiving Hacks For The Best Meal Of Your Life How did hack go from â€Å"illegal computer activity† to â€Å"a tip for making things easier to do†? Looking a little further, I find that hack and hacking to connote only malicious unauthorized access to computer files may reflect general usage, but not that of programmers who are proud to be known as â€Å"hackers.† The OED has ten entries for the word hack: five as a noun, four as a verb, and one as a combining form. The verb hack in the sense of â€Å"to cut with heavy blows† has been in the language since the early 13th century, but the use of hack in the context of computer programming dates from the 1970s. Note: Hack in the sense of â€Å"to cope with† dates from 1955: â€Å"I can’t hack all this extra work.† The etymology of the computer term hack is not certain. According to one theory, it derives from the noun hack used as tech slang for â€Å"one who works like a hack at writing and experimenting with software, one who enjoys computer programming for its own sake. (OnlineEtymologyDictionary). The noun hacker does not carry a connotation of illegal activity in the following OED citations from 1976: The compulsive programmer, or hacker as he calls himself, is usually a superb technician. The compulsive programmer spends all the time he can working on one of his big projects. ‘Working’ is not the word he uses; he calls what he does ‘hacking’. The earliest citation that associates the word hacking with illegal activity is dated 1983: Hacking, as the practice of gaining illegal or unauthorized access to other peoples computers is called. Because hack, hacker, and hacking have such varied connotations, writers should consider the intended audience when using them. In the programming community, hacker and hacking are good things, or at least neutral. Using an adjective to describe the bad kind might be useful when writing for programmers, for example, â€Å"malicious hacking† or â€Å"illegal hacking.† As for the noun hack meaning â€Å"tip,† â€Å"suggestion,† or â€Å"work-around,† I expect the usage will become embedded in computer-speak. The trendy use of hack in the context of cooking, parenting, and other non-computer-related fields, however, will probably eventually revert to tip or suggestion. The Self Paper Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

The Self Paper - Essay Example These may be positive or negative. For example, a girl who believes that she is fat may avoid the reassurances for her friends, which suggest otherwise. However, a student who believes that he is smart may continue to believe the same after looking his transcript, which shows a C grade. Rogers labeled this difference between reality and self-concept as â€Å"incongruence†. Important here to note is that everybody has some degree of incongruence but what really matters is â€Å"how much† (Weiten, 2008). Rogers also believed that the congruence or incongruence has a direct linkage with the childhood experiences of the person. Quite understandably, people and especially children are hungry for love, attention, and affection. During their childhood, parents and guardians are responsible for the same (Weiten, 2008). Rogers argue that parents that provide unconditional love to their children are at the same time fostering congruence; however, parents that make their love cond itional, find great disparities between the self-concept and actual experiences of their children, in other words fostering incongruence. This is true because when the love of the parents appears to be conditional for the children, they are more likely to block unfavorable experiences so that they could reassure themselves that they are worthy of love. On the other hand, children getting unconditional love would develop a sense of security and confidence in them, which would them to face the experiences and their reality in a better way (Baumeister, 1999). Development of the concept of self has two important aspects. First is the existential self which refers to â€Å"the most basic part of the self-scheme or self-concept; the sense of being separate and distinct from others and the awareness of the constancy of the self† (Baumeister, 1999; (Weiten, 2008). During his early days, a young child realizes that he exists as a separate entity in time and space like everything else does. When he feels the touch of someone else or sees objecting moving due to his force, this is when he gains an understanding of his own existence, which is different from that of others. Second aspect of self is the categorical self, which develops when the child grasps an understanding of the fact that he or she is not a separate entity but at the time is an object like many other objects present in the surrounding. This allows the child to realize that like other objects he or she also has certain properties and characteristics that define him and are an important part or his or her existence. â€Å"I am tall†, â€Å"I am a girl†, â€Å"I am 3† and others. With the passage of time, these characteristics and properties which people apply to themselves become more complex and internal concerning psychological traits, comparative evaluations and others (Weiten, 2008). The relationship between self and emotions is an important one, which also leads to the under standing of self-esteem. Emotions refer to the experiences of an individual’s state of mind and how an individual thinks or feels goes on to determines his self worth or self-esteem (Powell, 2005). Self Esteem refers to the extent to which one values him or herself, the perceived worth and the degree to which he or she approves or accepts his or her existence. Higher self-esteem would refer to a positive view of self which would ultimately lead to optimism, confidence,

Refugees, Children in detention and rights

Refugees, Children in detention and rights Refugees, Children in detention Backdrop Half of the worlds refugees are children but their voices are amongst the least heard. Amidst the debate and conflict around refugees and border protection, the rights of refugee children have been neglected. The vulnerable condition of refugee children is evident from the statement of Ibrahim Ishreti, a refugee child living on bridging visa, he says: before coming to Australia we heard that everyones human rights and freedoms are respected here but nobody would believe what is happening to us†¦ We dont have any human rights and are treating like animals. Like other human beings our lives are not normal and our feelings and thinking are dead. We are depressed and can not smile[1]. Australia is signatory of significant number of human rights treaties including the1951 Refugee Convention and its 1967 Protocol and own affluent custom of providing shelter to refugees, however the current policy of mandatory detention for on-shore arrival including children (whether accompanied or unaccompanied) has acutely damaged its international reputation. The mandatory detention might be justifiable policy concerns but it advanced wide community pro and contra debate and discussion in the country. The writer is a Pakistani origin immigrant in Australia. Pakistan considers a poorest country of the world host over a million Afghan refugees enjoying ample freedoms, however in Australia where the number of unauthorized arrivals has never been much more than 4000 in any one year are placed indefinitely in detention camps with limited access to services, hence the motive for selecting this topic. Key Aspects of the Policy The inherent intentions for implementing the mandatory detention policy are to have an â€Å"ordered† approach to immigration and to make certain that the countrys boundaries are secure. But little or no consideration has been given to the impact of these polices on the children who are caught up in them. That policy ââ€" Denies internationally recognised fundamental human rights to all children of particular social group; ââ€" Children without committing any crime are put behind razor wire and are locks up. ââ€" And fails to recognises the vulnerability and special needs of these children. United Nations being representative body of the international community has undertaken the responsibility for the promotion and protection of human rights of all human beings including children. Therefore the UN has adopted separate legislation i.e. â€Å"UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC)† in 1989 for the protection of child rights to which Australia became party in 1990. The UNCRC is an exhaustive code of guidance and management for policy development and practices relating to children. This specific child rights legislation emphasizes that a child seeking refugee status is entitle for appropriate protection and humanitarian assistance. The various human rights treaties grant universal rights to refugee children like all other people and additional rights as children and particular rights as refugee. Therefore refugee children are entitled for special treatment and care and not to be treated discriminately. Nevertheless many Australian might support or oppose the governments policy of dealing asylum seekers but the indisputable reality is that subjecting children to any form of detention is a breach of their guaranteed rights. Imprisoning these children in the context of UNCRC is either â€Å"cruel and inhuman treatment† or in soft words is â€Å"harsh treatment†, which are undesirable under the convention. The concerns due to which these children fled from their countries, detention adds in their sorrows and concerns. Therefore if we cant recompense their grievances and concerns then we dont have the right to add into it. The UNCRC articulates[2] that â€Å"holding children in detention shall be used as a measure of last resort and only for the shortest possible time†. But the Australian practice seems to be the denial of this vested right since here refugee children are detained at the outset of their unauthorized arrival. Without going into the facts finding of their flight for a known country putting these children in detention is like closing eyes from their dilapidated conditions they suffered from in their home countries. Being national of this country our happiest lives can never comprehend the worse situations they passed from and pushing into confinement compel them to spend formative years of their lives in detention, which will obviously damage their future personality traits[3]. Keeping children in mandatory detention is denial of their internationally recognised basic human rights. Oftenly it has been experienced that during relief activities the children needs are not properly taking care of which are of vital importance for their normal development and growth. Every child has certain age-specific requirements that must be satisfied, for instance basic health care, nutrition and education are necessary for physical and mental development. Healthy psychosocial development depends in large measure on the nurturing and stimulation that children receive as they grow, and on the opportunities that they have to learn and master new skills. The healthy psychosocial development in refugee children should involve counseling and skills for coping effectively the multiple trauma of loss, uprooting and often more damaging experiences. Hence where the childrens developmental needs are not sufficiently met it results in long-term tragic consequences. Challenges and/or Controversies The Australia international obligations relating to refugees and children are not adequately publicised amongst public at large therefore everyone has their own perception about refugees. Majority believe that refugees are lairs, criminals, ‘forum shoppers, welfare cheats and queue jumpers[4]. It is interesting to note neither international law recognizes the terminology of ‘queue jumper nor other civilized nations use this terminology. The obvious reason for using this terminology could be that Australia is not willing to grant refugee status every individual opted for such status instead it has the intention to allow a carefully selected populace of pre-chosen countries to live as refugees in the country. A significant number of Australians also consider refugees a threat to economy and social services sector of the country. The arrival of children seeking refuge in Australia is comparatively less than the other developed countries, however still children remain a significant percentage of the total number of arrivals. Sometimes children flee alongwith their parents and/or guardians and sometimes alone (usually known as unaccompanied minors). The flight from homeland to the country of refuge subjects all including children to the notions of a new authority though a child neither has any motive nor has any voice in the decision of flight. Article 3 of the UNCRC gives overriding effect to the principle of ‘Best Interests of the child in these wording; â€Å"In all actions concerning children, weather undertaken by public or private social welfare institutions, courts of law, administrative authorities or legislative bodies, the best interest of the child shall be a primary consideration†. The principle of ‘Best Interests of the child has been enunciated in different Australian laws however the law relating to onshore management of asylum seekers does not contain this principle. The Migration Amendment Act of 1992 identifies asylum seekers as designated persons.[5] Section 189 states that â€Å"a designated person must be detained during the processing of their refugee status†. Section 192 goes further giving two options for release obtaining a Temporary Protection Visa or being deported.[6] This section spells for mandatory detention of everyone including children till the decision of his/her status.[7] Here at this junction the lacking of distinction between immigration status of adults and children confuse the internationally accepted principle of ‘Best Interests of the child and same standard treatment is in contravention of the UNCRC. The policy of mandatory detention can not be justified on the plea that since childrens needs cannot be met in isolation, therefore they are kept with their caregiver in detention. As it is believed that children needs are normally meet most effectively within the context of family and community. It is therefore, necessary to strengthen the capacities of refugee families to meet their own needs and improve the participation and situation of adult refugees particularly women, in their child related activities and in this way they will contribute significantly to the welfare of their children. Selection of one challenge and its reflection on policy based solution Best Interest In relation to the refugee children whether accompanied or unaccompanied the primary goals of any action or program must be: To ensure the protection and healthy development of these children To achieve durable solutions appropriate to the immediate and long term developmental needs of these children. In absence of any uniform definition of ‘best interests for every child, a good indicator to judge whether a child best interests are being achieved, would be a childs aptitude that how much s/he enjoys his or her rights in a available environment.[8] Since the UNCRC also doesnt clearly define childs ‘best interest therefore in all actions and decisions affecting a child; â€Å"it is the best interests of that individual child which must be taken into account rather than children generally. The childs best interests†¦..must be the subject of active consideration†[9]. It necessitates to be established that childrens interests are of primary concerns and have adequately been conferred. The principle of ‘best interests reiterated in article 9(1) of the UNCRC states that children should never be separated from their parents against their will except when ‘necessary for the best interests of the child. The interaction between the ‘best interests principle, family unity and immigration can be enlightened by referring preamble of the UNCRC providing a reference point by recognizing that: â€Å"[T]he child, for the full and harmonious development of his of her personality, should grow up in a family environment, in an atmosphere of happiness, love and understanding†. In order to support the best interests of the refugee children many of the obligations under the UNCRC are relevant for instance, protection from violence, the highest attainable standards of physical and mental health, special care for children with disabilities, education, keeping confidentiality of their personal information, non-discrimination, recreation and the right to full cultural life (including language) are all factors that create a nurturing environment. Incorporating Children voices into policy debate UNCRC believes ‘voiced code for childrens participation in the programs affecting them. This legal instrument marks a change by respecting them as human being capable of full understandings and has power to decision and disregarded that they are being objects of adult intervention. The childrens right to participate in fellow societies has been accepted in articles 12-15 of the UNCRC. This convention has offered in addition to civil, political, social, economic and cultural rights, the right to freedom of opinion expression, information, religion and conscience; and the right to form associations[10]. Refugees children being most vulnerable members of Australian society, they should have the right to have their fundamental needs for shelter, food, physical and emotional care and education have been met, and to live freely and securely within our society. Our society should value and protect them. We are equally responsible alongwith the government to ensure these needs are met if a childs family/caregiver cannot or will not protect their rights. But due to their protracted legal status refugee children have concerns. They are not part of policy decision impacting their lives, hence condemned unheard and ignored. Purportedly three agencies the federal government, the private reformative firms and the state government are in charge of the management of detention centres. There is strong likelihood that these agencies would not consider childrens interests before their own. When the managers of such agencies are in chase of jurisdictional and policy issues where would children placed?[11] This management attitude proves the genuine worries, distress and concern of refugee children regarding their unresolved legal situation and their inability to move towards integration into the Australian community. Many children describe themselves as happy, good, but detailed their depression and distress that accompanied being in a limbo situation. The non-resolution of their migration or refugee situation is their paramount concern. The current manifestations of distress, while particularly concerning are equalled by the knowledge of the long term impact of ‘not belonging; to a community; to a state and to a nation. If a child cannot access normal citizenship, then their ability to grow emotionally and integrate themselves into their new country is diminished. These children have the possibility of becoming adults with a sense of frustration and anger that will impact on their lives and will impact on our lives in the Australian community in the forthcoming years. [NOTE: the writer considers the points of this paragraph as specifics impacting her local area of residence surrounded by refugee children] Conclusion If we step into the shoes of refugees and realize their sorrows and grieves then we will never deny the rights of refugee children to live with their families and reunite them when separated, having access to all basic necessities of life. If everyone of us recognize and struggle to make available all such rights to our children then why deny it for Iraqi, Afghan and Iranian children? We should provide them such harmonize environment where they can play, grow and learn. â€Å"We should keep ready ourselves to answer our children when they will look back on this time and ask what we did for refugee kids, at least we can say we gave them their childhood†[12].

The Importance of History

The Importance of History History is an important part of anyone’s life. History helps understand the past so the people of the country can understand where they come from. The subject helps children understand who they are and where they came from. History is basically knowledge about the past events. It is a part of everyday life that goes partially un-noticed. Everybody, people talk about past events without even knowing that they are performing the task. One needs to know and understand the past at doctor’s offices and solving arguments between children. I would have to know my past and my family past in order to fill out the information at my doctors. This is the way the doctor can know what to expect from my health issues. I could use history to find out the solution and the start of the problem of sibling arguments. If my two children got in a fight and one of them told me one thing and the other told me another, I would be able to tell from their history on how the fight actually went. History helps the people of today realize why their country enters wars, where their beliefs come from, and understand their culture of their country. According to the author of â€Å"Importance of History,† David Crabtree, the definition of history is that it is a story about the past that is significant and true. This simple definition contains two words that are packed with meaning which must be understood in order to understand history, which are significance and truth. Significance is determined by the historian. The historian sorts through the evidence and presents only that which, given his particular world view, is significant. No one could record everything that is true about an event in the past. Everything can be entered in history because every factor can be used in studies, teachings, and certain other possibilities. Most historians use the word â€Å"true† to mean any perspective well supported by facts. Several people can have different perspectives on history itself or bits of pieces of history (Crabtree, 1993). So it is important that we, as the people, can get all of the correct information and learn as much as possible to fully understand the full outlook and meaning of history. The resources that I can use are the school library and the public library. If I want a personalized story to be told to me, so that I can have a personal answer I can talk to something that lived through the time that I need to find research on. This person can give me a perspective that I could not get from a book, computer, or the library. Another resource that I could use is movies and television. I could watch documentaries about the event since the documentaries are based on facts and truth. They provide an in-depth view on the topics and they give more sources than necessary. I could watch the television channel National Geography or the History Channel, because they give the most honest and truthful facts to the viewers. Works Cited Crabtree, D. (1993, November). The Role Of Forensic Interviews On Children s Capacities...

Throughout time children have been sole witnesses of crimes either committed to them or in their presence. Leaving forensic interviewers with the burden of withdrawing reliable information in the hopes that these children can remember. Forensic interviewers are not completely aware of children’s capacities and limitations when it comes to communication, and therefore are faced to try to withhold as much information through techniques that will elicit testimony. The children were interviewed at the Children’s Institute International (CII) in California. They interviewed nearly 400 hundred children
